Palace of the Kings of Navarre at Olite
The Palacio Real de Olite, a residence of the Navarrese monarchs until the union with Castile (1512), is one of the most interesting Gothic structures in Europe. It is located on remains of the old Roman "praesidium" of Oligitum.
In the 13th-15th centuries it underwent various transformations, but its greatest period was under King Carlos II el Noble in the early 15th century. He attracted several Spanish and European master craftsmen, so the construction has a light feel to it through its different construction phases, which blend in with the existing fortifications. The cultural itinerary can be completed with a visit to the original Ancient Palace (now a Parador de Turismo), the Gothic church of Santa María and the Romanesque church of San Pedro, with a cloister and a slender Gothic tower ending in a spire that rivals the other towers of the Royal Castle-Palace.
