Church of Santa María de Eunate

A harmonious building in the Protogothic style (around 1170), perhaps an old Templar hospital or cemetery-church at the service of the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago, which runs just alongside.

Its ground floor is octagonal, and is surrounded by a cloister. It is completed by a pentagonal apse that is semicircular inside. It is supported by columns that line up under the eave and alternate with overhanging eaves with figures of human heads.

In the resulting antimacassars, the wall is adorned with inset and blind windows and two doors (the north access -opposite the Pilgrim’s Way- is more decorated that the opposite side). The ribs of the inner dome, which converge in the centre, reflect Muslim architectural influence that is very common in the cultural syncretism of the Pilgrim's Way.

Its highly proportioned use of space is the same as that of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre at Torres del Río, further down the Pilgrim’s Way in Navarre near Viana. The image of the Virgin Mary is a reproduction of the original one, which disappeared.
