Muñoz Sola Museum of modern art (Tudela)

Retrato de Margarita de Borbón Parma

Portrait of Margarita de Borbón Parma, by Muñoz Sola.

The Muñoz Sola Museum of Modern Art houses a varied collection of French painting from the second half of the 19th century, which the painter from Tudela César Muñoz Sola (1921-2000) brought together with a representative selection of his own art. The building that houses the museum has been completely rebuilt for this purpose.

It was originally the Noble House of the Beráiz, a major family of the nobility of Tudela since the Middle Ages. The palace underwent a major reform in the Baroque era, adopting a classical façade. The collection is made up of two very different parts: the works painted by César Muñoz Sola, which are exhibited in a specific room of the Museum and the rest of the works, by different authors and mainly dated between 1850 and 1950 and which constitute the main objective of this museum.

The linking thread of the collection is the affinity of the subjects represented according to the tastes of Muñoz Sola the collector, who purchased paintings with the same themes he worked on as a painter, i.e. still life, portraits and landscapes, and (to a lesser extent) seascapes, religious or mythological themes, interiors and scenes of women.
